Introduction
Just got my student's job. I am responsible to bring the linux comps in 104 to a workable situation.
I'll use this blog to update on my progress. Any help is welcome.
- Checking out:
- Comp running CentOS. Better start learning Red Hat.
- Networks are unavailable. If we want a true rival to WinXP, we better check why we don't get Internet connections.
- Load times are crazy. Up to 5 minutes just to boot to login screen. Man what's that supposed to mean?
- Gnome is a bit speedier then KDE. Why? In any case something is probably fishy with the configuration. I mean thes PC's are brand new.
- I suppose the LDAP isn't configured as it should.
eth0 takes also too much time to load. Although this one is acceptable. Hanging happens at NFS load.
To do: Talk to esr. Get to know what he's done over here. Get root passwd, try to fiddle around. I suppose the thing works good as root. Probably esr didn't check login as user. Start reading up on ldap. Check if WinXP uses ldap. (Might seem stupid, but hey, I'm a noob)
Due: Beginning of next semester:mid to end october.
That's it for now.
(edit 2019): Back in 2006, I was working at JCT 's computer center. During that time I tried documenting my work by writing this blog post and this one . I'm reposting these here for old times sakes.
